Choose a rug by the space it will occupy

A room photograph can suggest a mood. A measured outline tells you how a particular rug will sit with your furniture.

Make the proposed size visible

Measure the clear floor area and the relevant furniture, then sketch their positions. Use an outline you can see in the room, such as strips of paper, to represent a candidate rug size. Walk around it and try doors and chairs in their normal positions.

Decide which furniture legs you want on the rug and which you want outside it. For a dining area, consider the space a chair occupies when pulled out. For a living area, consider the connection between the seating pieces. There is no single border measurement that suits every room.

Keep the orientation attached to the size

A 160 × 230 cm rug occupies a different footprint from a 200 × 300 cm rug. Rotating either swaps which edge follows the sofa. Compare the actual width and length in your room, not simply a “medium” or “large” label.

Look beyond the top surface

Compare fibre composition, construction, pile and backing where those details are supplied. A photograph cannot reliably establish softness, pile height or the way a rug will feel under a door. A sample, where available, can help with colour and texture.

Read the stated cleaning instructions against how you plan to use it. “Washable” can describe a removable cover, a complete rug or a particular cleaning method. Check the exact configuration and any equipment or care conditions the manufacturer specifies.

If a pad or underlay is needed, confirm what is included and whether the supplier describes it as suitable for your floor. Treat compatibility as a question to resolve, not something to infer from the product image.

Compare like-for-like configurations

Keep the selected size, colour and construction beside the price. A cover-only offer and a cover-plus-pad system should not be treated as equivalent. Check for size-specific photographs or patterns: the border and motif can look different across sizes.

Choose how much visual work the rug should do. A quiet texture can give patterned furniture space; a stronger pattern can become the focal point in a simpler room. View samples alongside the colours you already own, in your own light.

Before deciding, revisit the delivery charge, lead time and stated returns conditions for the exact item. Do not assume that every size in a range has the same availability or handling arrangements.

Before you decide

  • Exact width, length, shape and orientation.
  • Furniture positions, door clearance and everyday routes.
  • Fibre, pile, construction and backing where confirmed.
  • Care instructions and the meaning of “washable”.
  • Cover, pad or underlay inclusions; exact size-level price.
